Laser Welding Engineer

AESC are rapidly expanding, we are setting up the Global Engineering Center (GEC) Europe as part of the global GEC, working closely with entities in the US, China and Japan. This role is based in Douai, with regional/global travel (approx 30%). As part of GEC Europe, you will be part of a diverse team of individuals who are highly skilled in battery cell manufacturing and have a proven track record in designing and ramping up battery cell manufacturing facilities worldwide.


Your role

As a Laser Welding Engineer, your objective is to lead the development, optimization and implementation of laser welding processes for our battery cell and module production. You will analyze current processes, identify bottlenecks, and implement innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, quality, and productivity. Your role extends from equipment design to full-scale implementation, from process qualification to production troubleshooting, ensuring that all laser applications align with performance targets and industry standards. Through close collaboration with equipment and process engineers, production teams and our global engineering network, you will contribute to the successful scaling of our battery manufacturing operations in Europe.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and optimize laser welding processes for battery cell production.
  • Analyse existing processes to identify optimization potentials and implement process improvements.
  • Conduct trials, monitor performance data, and adjust processes to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Collaborate with equipment engineers to ensure smooth integration of new equipment in Gigafactories.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce waste and improve production cycle times.
  • Implement and maintain process control systems to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Provide technical support and training to local engineering teams.
  • Document process changes, trials, and improvements for knowledge sharing and traceability.

Your profile

  • University degree (bachelor’s or equivalent) in Mechanical Eng., Materials Science, or a related field.
  • +5 years’ experience in laser welding, preferably in battery production or a related industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of laser welding principles, techniques, and equipment.
  • Experience in setting up and running laser welding applications & monitoring systems is required
  • In-depth knowledge of welding monitoring & quality inspection systems such as Lessmüller or Precitec.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to laser welding processes.
  • Experience with Six Sigma, Shainin, or other process improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with statistical process control (SPC) and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to conduct trials, analyse data, and refine processes for improved performance.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, working effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Fluency in English, with proficiency in Spanish or Chinese as a plus.
