R&D USP Technician

Position overview

As part of the R&D Bioprocess team, the USP Technician will be responsible for executing upstream laboratory activities related to microbial fermentation and process development.

This is a hands-on laboratory role focused on experimental execution, data generation, and process reproducibility at lab scale. The position reports directly to the Lead of Bioprocess and works in close collaboration with scientists, process engineers and the analytical team.


Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Fermentation Activities

  • Prepare culture media, buffers, stock solutions, and consumables.
  • Perform microbial cultures and fermentation runs at lab scale (shake flasks, benchtop bioreactors).
  • Operate and monitor bioreactors (pH, DO, temperature, agitation, feeding strategies).
  • Perform sampling and ensure proper sample handling and traceability.
  • Apply strict aseptic techniques during all experimental phases.

Experimental Execution & Data Collection

  • Execute experimental plans defined by the Bioprocess team.
  • Accurately record process parameters and observations in laboratory notebooks and digital systems.
  • Compile and rigorously structure experimental data for analysis.
  • Report deviations or unexpected observations in a timely manner.

Equipment & Lab Management

  • Ensure cleaning, preparation, and basic maintenance of lab-scale bioreactors and related equipment.
  • Participate in equipment calibration and qualification activities.
  • Maintain laboratory organization in compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Manage consumables stock and anticipate laboratory needs.

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Contribute to improving laboratory practices and SOPs.
  • Support troubleshooting activities during fermentation runs.
  • Collaborate closely with USP engineers and the analytical team to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Promote safety, rigor, and good laboratory practices (GLP-like mindset).


Profile

  • Technician degree (BTS, DUT, Licence Pro or equivalent) in biotechnology, microbiology, or bioprocessing.
  • 2–5 years of experience in microbial culture and fermentation in a laboratory environment.
  • Hands-on experience with benchtop bioreactors is mandatory.
  • Strong aseptic technique and laboratory discipline.
  • Rigorous, organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable executing repetitive experiments with consistency and precision.
  • Team-oriented with good communication skills.
  • English speaking/reading skills required.
